asked:

Pickles are a popular snack, side dish, and condiment. But did you know that pickles are also a healthy part of your diet? There are many different pickle recipes out there, but each version has its own healthy benefits depending on the ingredients that went into the pickle and the method used for pickling, whether fermented or packed with vinegar. Pickles are great for most diets because not only are they low in calories, and low in fat or fat-free, many versions are also low in sugar.

Pickles are also a healthy edition to your diet for other reasons. Pickles, being made from cucumbers or other vegetables, are high in fiber which is necessary for digestive health and fighting cancer. The cucumbers and other vegetables also contain antioxidants, which fight free-radicals, and depending on the veggie, can be a good source of calcium, magnesium, and iron. The recommendation by most health professionals is to eat five servings of vegetables and fruit each day. Eating pickles is a great way to get a daily serving or two of your five-a-day!

The spices with which pickles are made are also healthy. For example, dill and garlic, both of which are popular in pickles, both have the ability to regulate bacterial growth. Dill and other spices also contain flavonoids, which is a healing addition to your diet. Mustard seeds are known to be good for digesting foods and even turmeric powder has medicinal properties and is believed to lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease.

Create a video blog…instantly.

asked:

There are thousands of harmful food additives that we are consuming every day. Many of these food additives have been show to be harmful to our health. The information in this article will help empower you to know what to look for.

In 1958 the government passed the Delaney Clause Food Additives Amendment which prohibited companies from adding known harmful chemicals to our food. But in spite of this, there are still dangerous chemicals that are still being added to our food and it is important to understand which chemicals these are and what the potential dangers are.

The only defense we have as consumers is that all packaged food is required to list all the ingredients on the label. We need to educate ourselves and become familiar with the harmful food additives and read every label of the food we purchase. The challenge however, is that food companies tend to make finding these suspicious ingredients somewhat tedious, hiding them in hard-to-find areas of the package and making the print extremely small so as to discourage their discovery.

The names of these chemicals themselves can complicate matters. These chemical names are long and foreign-sounding and people typically skip over them because they are tedious to try and read. The food producers are clever. They will intentionally use healthy-sounding phrases to dupe pepople into thinking that the product is free of chemical additives. For instance, “Natural Flavors” or “No Preservatives” are commonly found on packaged food products, but does this mean that the product is free of harmful food additives? Absolutely not. Again, you must check all the ingredients to determine whether a product is completely free of food additives.

health

asked:

Barley Grass belongs to a family of grasses called cereal grasses. During the first part of the 20th century, the juice of barley grass was discovered to be rich in vitamins and minerals. The light-green leaves of barley plants are usually called barley grass because they are long and narrow like grass. Barley grass has been cultivated as early as 7000 BC, making this food one of the earliest cultivated foods known to man kind. Barley grass is used as a food source in some parts of Asia and it is available for food supplementation as both a juice and a powder that can be added to foods or taken as tablets or capsules.

Barley grass (5 grams) has more protein and fiber than a serving (114 grams) of raw spinach. Barley grass juice contains antioxidants, enzymes, and other phytochemicals that in vitro neutralize free radicals and other unfriendly chemicals, including pesticides and food preservatives. This grass also contains large amounts of beta carotene, folic acid, calcium, and several B vitamins making it a good source of nutrients. Barley juice also contains nutrients such as vitamins C and E, which are much more potent together than when taken separately. Barley grass is high in iron, all essential amino acids, flavonoids, and a number of minerals. Barley grass may sometimes be rich in vitamin K, which interferes with the action of anticoagulants such as Coumadin (the brand name for warfarin, a drug used to treat and prevent blood clots).

Caffeinated Content

asked:

The mango originated in Southeast Asia where it has been grown for over 4,000 years. Over the years mango groves have spread to many parts of the tropical and sub-tropical world, where the climate allows the mango to grow best. Mango trees are evergreens that will grow to 60 feet tall. The mango tree will fruit 4 to 6 years after planting. Mango trees require hot, dry periods to set and produce a good crop. Most of the mangos sold in the United States are imported from Mexico, Haiti, the Caribbean and South America. Today there are over 1,000 different varieties of mangos throughout the world.

Vitamin Content: Mango is rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Vitamin C content is more in raw mango as compared to that in ripe mango. It also has traces of Vitamin E, Vitamin B and Vitamin K.

The dulcet, juicy insides of the mango pack a nutritional punch. Its characteristic orange color is a clue to its storehouse of beta carotene (Vitamin A). Ripe mangos hold the highest levels of beta carotene, while green mangos are higher in Vitamin C. These antioxidant carotenoids are known for their protective power against certain cancers. Mangos also supply ample potassium, making them ideal for hypertensive patients or anyone looking to replenish energy after physical activity.

Caffeinated Content

asked:

Health: What is Osteopenia?

Osteopenia is considered the first step along the road to osteoporosis, a serious condition in which bone density is extremely low. Osteopenia, if not treated, may result in osteoporosis. Osteopenia encompasses a wide range of fracture risks including age, bone mineral density, and clinical risk factors. Osteopenia, the milder bone-loss disease, is less well known but affects an estimated eighteen million young and middle-aged women, including those in their late teens and early twenties.

Some people who have Osteopenia may not have bone loss, but they may naturally have a lower bone density. It is diagnosed with a bone mineral density (BMD) test, usually done to see whether a person has osteoporosis. A standard X-ray is not useful in diagnosing Osteopenia because it is not sensitive enough to detect small amounts of bone loss or minor changes in bone density. Bones do not reach their greatest density until about 30 years of age. For children and people younger than 30, anything that helps increase bone density will have positive long-term benefits. A balanced diet and regular exercise will help slow the loss of bone density, delay Osteopenia, and delay or prevent osteoporosis.

Women are far more likely to develop Osteopenia and osteoporosis than men because they lose bone mass sooner and faster. Women who diet excessively to maintain a low body weight often eliminate dairy products from their diet. This puts them at an increased risk of bone loss because they may lose their primary source of calcium, a vital source of bone strength. Women should eat a healthy diet, maintain a sturdy weight, exercise, and avoid smoking. Low bone mass appears in about 50 percent of women in their 50′s and more than 85 percent of women in their 70′s. Approximately 90 percent of women over the age of seventy-five have experienced a bone fracture. Osteopenia affects an estimated eighteen million young and middle age women. That includes women in their late teens and early twenties. It is imperative that we teach our young girls that they must eat healthy and include foods that are high in calcium in their diet.

Caffeinated Content

asked:

The Mercer National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans is conducted using a national probability sample of public and private employers with at least 10 employees. supranational and national European health agencies, as well as noted scientists introducing case studies relevant to the topic of modern European health policies. Hawksworth, G. (1994): Health Aspects of Housing Estates - the pharmacists perspective. Anderson, C. , Todd, J. (1994): Health promotion in Community pharmacy-(2) Contacts and the importance of team work. Review of the health care information landscape in a selection of EU Member States, which have all approached the data challenges and performance management of health care for chronic care patients in innovative ways. No , epSOS is not a health card project, although health card-based infrastructure and communication systems are integrated into the project. CBHFA stands for Community Based Health and First Aid. CBHFA aims at silently revolutionizing the way the Movement is doing much of its health work. With large-scale, government-subsidized investment in health information technologies through the federal stimulus package, the potential to capture medical cost savings and improve the quality of care has never looked brighter. Since the beginning of the year, a new health reform in Croatia provides for a universal contribution by patients of 20 per cent of treatment costs. The objective of EuroREACH is to provide tools to health care researchers to better enable them to access well-organised health care data that allow for comparability at European level.

Health of undocumented migrants is highly at risk due to difficult living and working conditions often characterised by uncertainty, exploitation and dependency. Health Education Authority (1995): Community pharmacists – an untapped resource in health promotion. Health plan care management teams can deliver tactical savings by sharpening their ability to apply a data-driven approach to identify and act on specific pockets of overuse and misuse of the medical delivery system. Health plans can meet the challenges of these uncertain times and counter the trend in administrative costs by focusing their efforts on driving out costs and creating a more variable cost structure. Health systems cannot function without a motivated workforce. Health care organisations and professionals find themselves in a paradox situation: if they give care, they may act against legal and financial regulations, if they don’t give care they violate human rights and exclude the most vulnerable. Although the focus will be on health care for chronically ill patients, many of the findings and recommendations, as well as the generic guidance that the Handbook will provide, will also be relevant and apply to other health services research and public health research more broadly. With large-scale, government-subsidized investment in health information technologies through the federal stimulus package, the potential to capture medical cost savings and improve the quality of care has never looked brighter. But the Vienna public health system developed with significant success.

Kansieo.com

asked:

Lettuce is one of the most delicate salad plants – there is usually nothing but disappointment to be gained from trying to bring a wilting specimen back to life. It has been cultivated since the earliest times, and varieties such as Cos or Romaine had become popular by the middle ages. Culpeper, the old English herbalist said, `The juice of lettuce mixed with oil of roses, applied to the forehead and temples procureth sleep and ease the head-ache’. He goes on to say that when taken ‘it abateth bodily lust’ this, it seems, is an accurate observation. Lettuce juice has been likened in effect to the sedative action of opium without the accompanying excitement. H.M. Evans of the University of California demonstrated in a series of experiments that whilst the lettuce had a calming effect on sexual ardour, there was a surprisingly strong compensatory effect in that the rate of fertility was greatly increased. So although the normal person might well find these two results to be incompatible (or at any rate inconceivable) lettuce is frequently suggested to help men who suffer from premature ejaculation. Pythagoras, the ancient Greek mathematician, therefore knew only half of this information when he called lettuce ‘The plant of the eunuchs: This compensation results from a mixture of tonic and sedative components in which the calming effect on the nervous system and digestive organs as well as the sexual is combined with a tonic action upon the glands. There is a slight laxative action with the unusual feature that the odor of ill-smelling stools is often much improved.

Lettuce contains a good spectrum of minerals, although these are present in average rather than exceptional quantities. The vitamin content includes a fair amount of carotene, but it is essential to bear in mind that the outer leaves may contain fifty times more than the white inside leaves, so juice everything. The strong therapeutic effect results from the many alkaloids present. These include asparagine (see asparagus), lactucine, lactucic acid and hyoscyamine. A mixture of lettuce and spinach juice is said to help the growth of hair if drunk to the extent of a pint or so a day. So much hair loss is caused by your genetic inheritance and not through deficiencies that this information is given for the sake of the desperate. There is much more evidence for its effectiveness in dealing with a nervous cough and as supportive therapy which might help but not cure the diabetic and the asthmatic and help ease those who have continuous pain.

Website content

asked:

“The secret to good health is to eat onions. The trouble is to keep it a secret.” 14,000 Quips & Quotes by E. C. McKenzie

Health is a word in every language of the world. In Spanish, it is salud; French, santé; German, gesundheit, and in Italian, salute. The definition, however, is not universal, nor is it easy to understand. In many cultures, health is defined as the “absence” of something, such as the absence of symptoms, illness or disease, or as determined by someone else, such as a health practitioner or societal norms.

It seemed almost impossible to determine what health was if not discussing the “absence” of symptoms or illness. Looking at the various philosophies of natural healing methods, most discuss the cause of illness or disease processes, but not what is health.

Why the Absence of Symptoms Does Not Equal Health

Many people associate symptoms as being a bad thing, believing that symptoms equal disease or illness. In all actuality, however, symptoms equal health. Impossible? No, not really. Please consider….

Let us use a cold virus as an example. The general symptoms of a cold are fever, aches and pains, stuffy nose, coughing, fatigue, and loss of appetite. What do the symptoms say?

Fever: an increase in body temperature slows the spread of a virus. Aches and pains: antibodies from the immune system are made in the bones; therefore, it is a sign that your immune system is working overtime (a good thing). Stuffy nose: the nose gets more congested trying to keep the virus contained. Coughing: when contaminants are in the lungs, the lungs remove them quickly by coughing them out and to prevent pneumonia. Fatigue: your body needs to put more energy towards fighting the infection. Loss of appetite: your body needs to use its energy to fight the infections, so digestion is considered not important.

What the average person does when they have this battery of symptoms is to take a cold capsule that lowers a fever, decreases pain, un-stuffs the nose, and calms the cough. Does this action help or harm the person?

The symptoms the person is feeling is saying that your body is doing what it needs to do to fight the invading virus. When the body does its job, the virus will be gone and the body can return to a healthier state.

But what if you take a substance that stops the body processes? If the fever is reduced, the virus can spread quicker. If the cough is suppressed, infected material can stay in the lungs, possibly leading to pneumonia. If you force yourself to work despite the fatigue, your body has to take some of its healing energy away from healing and put it into keeping you functional.

Which situation is healthier?

Many people have symptoms, however, without a known illness, such as chronic pain, chronic cough, asthma, and allergies, to name a few. It is true that some symptoms linger. However, homeopathy theory states that if suppressive treatments are not used, then the body can return to balance always. Sometimes lingering symptoms or prolonged illness are the result of suppressed symptoms.

Determining Health

No one can tell another person if they are healthy or not; it’s very individualized. In nursing school, health was rarely discussed, but when it was, classmates varied on their responses to whether or not a person would be considered healthy as there is no one universal definition for “health”; therefore, it must be considered on an individual basis.

Caffeinated Content

asked:

Health care is one of the most important components in your life. Disease or illness can really mean a down turn in your life. The biggest asset we can have in life therefore is health. Health care is normally defined as the management or treatment of any health problem through the services that might be offered by medical, nursing, dental or any other related service. When you talk about the care of health, you are talking of all goods and services that are produced to improve on your health. They may be curative, preventative or even palliative solutions. A system of health care is one that is organized to give health services to a population or a group of people.

Health care can be for an individual or for a large group of people depending on how the systems are organized. Importance of health care cannot be overemphasized. In society, people are worried about the kinds of systems there are, to deal with issues of health. In developed countries, their systems are designed to cater for all people; whether poor or rich. However, the systems are lacking in regard to flaws. In developing countries, people usually take care of health as an individual thing and, if you do not have enough money, you might not get access to quality care. There are so many disparities and, some systems in certain countries are becoming worse; not able to deal with demand of health. Health is not a cheap affair, you have to have a good system if you want it to work for you. Governments have the responsibility to create or formulate policies that will favor people in this regard. Good systems of health can be erected by the top most leadership of a state.

Caffeinated Content
